Hi! My name is Maddy Gillis. I grew up in Kensington, Maryland, just north of Washington, DC. I graduated from Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, Maryland in 2007, where I was in the IB Program and was also the captain of the Varsity Field Hockey, Basketball, and Lacrosse teams. I have wanted to be a Marine Biologist since I was young, and was especially interested in sharks. In the summer of 2010 I interned at the South African Marine Predators Lab in Mossel Bay, South Africa, where I studied great white sharks, various small benthic sharks, seals, and cetaceans. I earned a Bachelor's degree in Biology from St. Mary's College of Maryland in 2011, where I was the President of the college's radio station, The Hawk (www.seahawkradio.com), and hosted an hour-long radio show called “The Evil Souffle Hour” every Sunday night. I am currently persuing a Masters degree in Coastal Marine and Wetlands studies at Coastal Carolina University, and have switched my research topic to the various effects of sublethal predation on marsh mussels.
When I am not out playing in the salt marsh or torturing mussels in the lab, I enjoy playing World of Warcraft (Raider of <Bane> on Khaz Modan), listening to music, and daydreaming about Stephen Colbert.
