I HAVE AN "ALAN" ACCOUNT HERE AT CCU.

1. Downloading the File

Go to this web site:

http://www.wes.army.mil/el/wetlands/wlpubs.html
(Note: This opens a new browser window.)

You will now see a table with various publications listed in it. The manual will be near the bottom of the list: Publication Number WRP-Y-87-1. To download the manual, click on "wlman87.pdf". BEWARE: The file is over 1.4 megabytes in size, so it will take a while to download.

Netscape will probably not recognize this file, and it will ask you what to do with it. Save it to the hard drive of the computer you’re using. (As is, it’s too big to fit on a DOS-formatted floppy disk.) When you’re prompted to save the file, pick a different directory than what Netscape defaults to. Try to save it in the "C:\" directory (also called the "root" directory). In any case, remember what directory you save it in!!

2. Opening the File

This file is in the "portable data format", which is readable only by a software program called Adobe Acrobat Reader. (The logo is for Adobe Systems, Inc.) There is a copy of Acrobat Reader on the ALAN server that you can use. You don’t need to do any sort of installation at all. You just need to know where to go to find it and start it up. Here’s how:

Log in to your ALAN account as usual.

Click on the "Start" button, go to "Programs", and select "Windows Explorer". At the top you should see a little window that looks like this:

Click somewhere on this, and select "Sys2 on Alan (G:)". The window on the right will change, and you will see a "Public" directory. Double-click this, and you will see the "Acroread" directory. Double-click this, and you should now see a file called "Acroread.exe". That’s the Acrobat Reader program. Double-click it to launch the program.

Once you’ve started Acrobat Reader, go to the File menu and select "Open." Now navigate to the directory where you saved the ".pdf" file, and open it up.

WARNING: Do not attempt to print the entire wetland delineation manual. It’s over 100 pages!!!

3. Saving the File on a Floppy Disk

If you’re trying to put it on a DOS-formatted floppy disk, things get complicated. Click here.
