Chemistry Programs

All chemistry majors and other science majors at Coastal take the introductory sequence General Chemistry I and II (CHEM 111 and 112) and associated laboratory courses (111L and 112L). The pre-requisite for CHEM 111 is Algebra and Analytic Geometry (MATH 130).

General Organic Chemistry I and II (CHEM 331 and 332) with associated laboratory courses (CHEM 331L and 332L) is required of all chemistry and biology majors.

In addition to these courses, the chemistry major core courses are:

Quantitative Analysis (CHEM 321 and 321L)
Instrumental Analysis (CHEM 422 with integrated laboratory)
Physical Chemistry I and II (CHEM 441, 441L and CHEM 442, 442L)
Independent Study/Undergraduate Research (CHEM 399 and CHEM 499)

Each student must also take three electives including one of the following sets of courses:
- The Classical specialization requires two additional advanced courses in one of the core areas of chemistry:
  - Inorganic
  - Organic
  - Analytical
  - Physical
- The Environmental specialization requires two advanced courses in that field:
  - Environmental Chemistry
  - Analytical and Field Methods in Environmental Chemistry
- The Biochemistry specialization requires two advanced courses in biochemistry.
  - Biochemistry I and II
