MARINE MAMMAL LINKS

This page is intended as a good jumping off point to search for information on marine mammals on the web. It is not by any means a comprehensive list. The following links are only a very small sample of the marine mammal sites on the web. I have tried to include primarily those sites which offer numerous additional links to marine mammal pages. Also, remember that these internet sources supplement, BUT DO NOT REPLACE, published journal articles and books. Happy hunting!

Do you have a good link to add? Please email me and let me know.

You may click on one of these shortcuts, or simply scroll down for information:

Be sure to check out this one: MARMAM

MARMAM is not just a web page. Rather it is an edited e-mail discussion list devoted to topics in marine mammal research and conservation, established in August 1993. As of March 1997 there were about 2,500 subscribers from 50 different countries. Anyone may subscribe to the list. Participants include researchers, policy makers and natural resource managers, educators, environmental groups, government agencies, private interests, and others. Subscription to the list is free. If you would like to subscribe and participate, instructions can be found at the MARMAM web site. In addition, my favorite part of their web site is the search function which allows you to search for old postings to the discussion list by topic, date, etc. In other words you can enter a term such as "echolocation" and get all the correspondence from years of MARMAM between scientists, educators, managers, and the general public about echolocation.

Good Starting Points to Search for Published Marine Mammal Literature and Reports

Oceanic Abstracts - an abstract of ocean sciences publications from 1981 to the present, searchable by author, title, or keywords. This link leads to the CCU Kimble Library periodicals index page which will link you to Oceanic Abstracts. The abstracts can only be accessed by Coastal students using on-campus computers.

Current Advances in Marine Mammal Science - a searchable bibliography of recent journal articles and publications (very comprehensive for anything since 1997)

Annotated Bibliography of Publications from the U.S. Navy's Marine Mammal Program - not a searchable database, but still manageable since it is subdivided into a number of useful categories

The Venice Marine Mammal Library - not a searchable database, but if you have an author in mind, it has over 4,000 titles

Bibliography on Cetacean Communication and Behavior at the Dolphin Study Group - again, not a searchable database, but if you have an author in mind, it is very comprehensive

Bibliography on Interactions between Seabirds and Marine Mammals - a unique and thorough bibliography on a narrow topic

Really Big Marine Mammal Links Sites

Chances are, you'll find what you're looking for in one of these sites. These are very large link pages to marine mammals sites, usually arranged alphabetically by subject or by species.

Search alphabetically by species

Marine Mammal Index - a comprehensive species information link arranged by species and covering most, if not all, species of marine mammals

Seal Conservation Society's Pinniped Species Information Pages - summaries of the biology and status of each pinniped species, with multiple photos of each. Check their home page for additional pinniped news and information.

Search by subject

Alphabetical Listing of Online Information - Wesley Elsberry's very large marine mammal links page
