Research Interests:

  • My general research interests are the investigation of biogeochemical processes through bacterial, chemical, and radiochemical analyses of samples from terrestrial, riverine, estuarine, and coastal marine environments. My current research involves monitoring the sanitary quality of local surf zone waters and investigating the impact of pollution on the water quality of local aquatic and marine environments. As director of the Environmental Quality Lab at CCU, I conduct research in the application of analytical chemistry to the solution of environmental problems.

Environmental Quality Lab Activities:

The Environmental Quality Laboratory (EQL) at Coastal Carolina University (CCU) is a non-profit facility emphasizing education, student training, research, and community service. The EQL is a small laboratory designed to produce analytical results of known, documented, and high quality.

The scope of the laboratory's chemical and microbiology capabilities extends to sampling programs for municipal and industrial wastewater, groundwater, surface water, and saltwater. The testing capabilities and techniques utilized include traditional wet chemical analysis techniques, classical and state-of-the-art instrumental analysis methods, and field measurements using portable analysis equipment.

The laboratory performs work on a routine basis for university students and faculty, private citizens, local communities, counties, and companies. The EQL currently conducts water quality monitoring for six local communities and water quality investigations for a local engineering firm. The lab maintains certifications with South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control appropriate to the categories of testing and data usability requirements.
