Barrier island – a long, narrow island, parallel to the shore, composed of sand and built by wave action.

Erosion – the set of all processes by which soil and rock are loosened and moved downhill or downwind

GIS – Geographic Information Systems; computer software; a mapping program which can create 3-D images and preform several calculations

Inlet – an area of water which cuts through a barrier island and empties into a marsh or lagoon behind the island

Inlet Migration – the lateral movement of inlets due to storm events and other natural processes

Longshore Transport – the movement of sediment along a beach by swash and backwash of waves that approach the shore obliquely

Overwash Features – usually sand which is dumped over land due to storm events or waves

Progradation – the addition and migration of the shoreline due to sediment deposition seaward.
