Have you ever had a favorite beach vacation spot which you revisited year after year? And have you ever noticed that the beach is different each time you go? The coastline changes constantly from tides, weather, and development. Tides change the shape of the beaches, and storms can move sands from place to place, while local development often changes the coastline by adding condos and high-rises. Erosion along the coastal United States is a big deal and is important for us to study and understand. By understanding processes and erosion on the coastline, predictions can be made on where to build or where not to build. For example, if the coastline is going to be eroding, it would probably not be a good idea to build a condo too close to the beach. Eventually, it would be right in the middle of the beach with water lapping at it's doorstep.
