Intro to the program:

This web-based program allows the user to view and manipulate aerial photographs in “real space”. This means that students can accurately measure distances and find GPS coordinates on the photographs by using the tools provided on the web site. Further, one can choose different “layers” or sets of photographs to lay on top of each other. For this project, a layer will be a set of aerial photographs taken along the coastline during specific time period (for example 1984). This function of the program allows a very efficient method for determining change in a specific location over time.

The web site is located at the following address :

http://camelot.coastal.edu/website/rising_tide_ims2

It will look like this:

If you notice, there are a series of tools along the left side of the view screen, and a list of possible layers to be shown along the right side of the view screen . To use the tools, simply single click on the option you wish to use. For example, if you wish to zoom in on an area, you would single click on the icon that looks like a magnifying glass. This selects the magnify option, from there you draw a box around the area to be magnified. The area inside the box will be magnified to fit the view screen.

To choose different layers select the box next to the layer that you wish to view. Remember, the most recently selected layer will be on top. To turn off a layer, simply remove the check next to the layer that you wish to turn off. After you have turned a layer on or off, select the refresh key to refresh the page.

To pan along the coast, you may want to use the “dragging” tool. To use this tool, select the icon that looks like a hand. Once selected, use the hand to drag the layer in the direction that you want to view. Do this by left click and holding on the view window. While the mouse button is depressed, simply drag the layer in the direction that you want to view and release.

To quickly return to a view of the coastline from a zoomed view, single click on the global view icon . This function will zoom out until the layer you have selected fits the view screen.

To measure the distance between two objects on the view screen, select the measure tool. To use this tool, select the ruler icon from the tools menu. Once selected, a plus sign will appear in place of the cursor in the view screen. To measure a distance, single click on the each of the two objects that you want a distance between. Now look at the measurement window for the distance.
